Traditional Portuguese restaurants

Nowadays historical area Mouraria in Lisbon is still filled with old taverns and small restaurants, serving traditional Portuguese food for local prices. In contrary to the more touristical historic areas, like Alfama or Bairro Alto, where prices in  restaurants are mostly much higher.

Weather

Though it’s very far south, Lisbon’s Atlantic breezes keep it generally a little cooler than other cities on the same latitude. June is probably the best summer month to visit, especially since the Saints’ festivals fall then. Spring and fall are very pleasant, warm, and sunny. Winter tends to stay warm too, but the rain can be relentless.

Restaurant/cafe Lost In Lisbon & terrace June 2018

A while ago I bought a beautiful Indian-style coat in the imposant Lost In  clothing store, Rua dom Pedro V no. 58. The nice saleswoman asked: ‘Did you already visit  the restaurant behind the store? No? From here it is possible to enter the restaurant’. What a surprise!  🙂

Breathtaking views Lisbon: restaurant Atira-te ao Rio, 10-min ferry trip, boat taxi & octopus salad

If you visit Lisbon for a few days, a 10-minutes ferry trip to the other side of the Tagus river is really worth it. Restaurant Atira-te ao Rio is one of my favorites!

View Lisbon from Cacilhas (part of Lisbon). Picture: Svetlana Borodina

Restaurant Atira-te ao Rio

Right next to the elevator to the Cristo Rei Statue, restaurant Atira-te ao Rio (litt. ‘throw yourself into the river’) is a space blessed by fabolous views over old town Lisbon.  Don’t forget to bring your camera!  🙂

Restaurant Atira-te ao Rio, Cais do Ginjal Lisbon & friend Josephine Lucassen

The menu is typically Portuguese: dishes with good presentation and tasty. We ordered my favorite dish in this restaurant: salada com polvo grelhado  (octopus salad),  cous-cous com legumes e iogurt (cous-cous with vegetables and yoghurt), and cool white wine (copo de vinho branco). Bill for 2 persons: 35 euro.

Wintertime

These pictures are made in September on a beautiful sunny day, but in wintertime there’s also the possibility to enjoy the views of old town Lisbon in the interior of the restaurant.

Restaurant Atira-te ao Rio, Cais do Ginjal Lisbon, September 2017

In wintertime the large windows allow the view to be equally (almost as) good as outside. The restaurant features an indoor room with a burning stove and a terrace with heaters and  blankets.

Lisbon’s most authentic neighbourhood: Mouraria

Miguel Avelar, Belgian architect, opened Café Belga on the ground floor of a renovated building in Mouraria, Lisbon’s most authentic neighbourhood. (Moors resided here after conquering Lisbon in 1147, until being expelled in the 15th century. Few traces of that time remain).

Lisbon’s historical center, hanging laundry & 3-bedroom apartment with lovely patio

Typical Portuguese is the hanging laundry, drying in the wind. In the narrow labyrinth of cobbled alleys of Lisbon’s ancient center it’s very nice to walk around!

Mouraria neighborhood my apartment

Mouraria, home of fado Music

No neighborhood in Lisbon is praised more in Fado music then Mouraria. This ‘Bairro’ (neighborhood in Portuguese) is a maze of little, narrow streets, situated between Graça (beautiful city viewpoint), Alfama and Costa de Castelo  (Castle of Saint George) is nowadays a ‘multiculti’ area.

Mouraria neighborhood apartment December 2008

Mouraria was given it’s name by the first Portugese king, Dom Afonso Henriques after the ‘siege of Lisbon’, in which Lisbon was taken over again by the (Christian) Portugese army from the Moorish overlords. This siege put an end to the Islamic control in the Iberian peninsula. The Moors however kept on living in the city after the conquist and gathered in the Mouraria.

It is said that the melancholic sounds of the music and singing of the Moorish people was at the base of Fado music. Amália Rodrigues, Lady of Lisbon, the ‘queen of Fado’ was born near Mouraria on Rua Martim Faz. More

Mouraria close to the apartment Rua do Terreirinho

The little streets of Mouraria are full of typical grocery stores, old bars (taverna’s) and cheap traditional restaurants. (No nightlife, if you’re looking for bars and disco’s, go to the nearby Bairro Alto neighborhood).

At the corner of the street is a night bar: Flamingo open till 03:00  ….

Restaurant Mouraria Rua do Terreirinho Laurinda & Jose Marie March 15

Restaurant in the street

The restaurant of Jose Marie and his wife Laurinda is a perfect place for a real portugese lunch. Don’t expect international food in this tiny restaurant. Their specialities are dishes like Cozido a Portuguesa (different kinds of meats, sausages and vegetables cooked in the same water), Coelho a caçador (Rabbitstew, in red wine) and Favas com entrecosto (Beans with porc meat and sausages).

If you don’t feel like experimenting, try a ‘bitoque. It’s steak and fries, with a fried egg, garlic and rice. Prices are very fair ca. 8 euro for a meal. In the late hours when the shops are closed and you are on your way home, you can always stop at Jose’s and take some beers, wine, water and even food home.
