Vintage port is made only in exceptional years, must be bottled within 2 years of the harvest date and be 100 % wine from that harvest. The magic of Vintage Port is different in every phase: as a young wine its captures the useful fruit characters, then after 20 years or more the effects of the slow bottle age integration are revealed and finally, after many decades the spirit dominates the wine. Vintage Port is amazing in all the three phases. A sua Saúde (to your health) !

Famous poster ‘the kiss’. As the couple leans together for a kiss, playful cupid offers them a glass of Ramos Pinto Port instead. ‘The kiss’ is one of the most recognized wine posters in the world. Founder of this Port House, Adriano Ramos Pinto, strongly believed in promotion both in Portugal and his primary market, Brazil. He backed his product with well-planned sales drive based on artistic advertisements.

The Napoleão wine shops, existing for more than 50 years in Lisbon, are specialised in the best Portuguese wines and Port wines. They can explain you all about the best Vintage years of the 20th Century.

There are not many real Wine Bars in Lisbon and this is a special one! In ‘the Goliards’ cellar you will find a selection of wines that were discovered directly on the production site, after a lot of frantic visits to different regions in Portugal, France, Spain and Italy. They are unique wines, a lot of them unknown in Portugal, made by demanding and passionate winegrowers, at very interesting prices.

Nadir Bensmail (born in Algeria, his parents moved to Toulouse in France when he was a kid) and Silvia Mourão Bastos met each other in Paris in 2000. They both have a similar passion: talking, laughing and drinking good wine! Nowadays they are real professionals: in 2005 they opened Wine bar ‘Os Goliardos’ in Lisbon.

The patio garden of Wine bar ‘Os Goliardos’. Once a week wine-linked events are being organised here like wine tastings with explanations for groups in different languages, get-togethers between amateurs and winegrowers and various events (like Beaujolais Nouveau), to promote the wine as a part of a culture.

The project of ‘The Goliards’ was born from their passion for wine and visits to winegrowers in different countries. At the moment, Silvia and Nadir visited over 500 winegrowers (their pictures are hanging on the walls in the bar) in Portugal, France, Spain and Italy. “They are our teachers and the source of our enthusiasm. We look for winegrowers with a deep soul, who conduct orchestras of scents and flavours, in symbiosis with the soil. We are greedy, curious and demanding explorers!”

In the wine bar you can discover a weekly selection of glasses (from €2,50) or bottles of wine (from € 4- € 50), sit inside or outside in the courtyard, eat a bit, like cheese, cold meats, canapés or tarts and buy wine to take back home with you (reds, whites, but also sweet wines, Port and Madeira).

“Bishop Golias”. The Goliards were a group of clergy who wrote bibulous, satirical Latin poetry in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. They were mainly clerical students at the universities of France, Germany, Italy, and England who protested the growing contradictions within the Church, such as the failure of the Crusades and financial abuses, expressing themselves through song, poetry and performance.

The derivation of the word is uncertain. It was said by them to originate from a mythical “Bishop Golias”, a mediæval Latin form of the name Goliath, the giant who fought King David in the Bible, suggestive of their posing as heavy drinking yet learned students who lampooned the ecclesiastical and political establishment.

‘We raise our glasses with different wines, different friends, old friends and new friends. We import wines from different countries directly from the winegrowers, that are very original and well-recognized by the wine-lovers of these countries. Ex: Champagnes, Sauternes, Chianti, Piemonte, Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Alsace wines, Bourgogne, Bordeaux, Syrah from the Rhône Valley. We are Goliards!”

This company specialised in the building and running of urban transport on sloping terrain. The first of its lifts was the Lavra, opened the year before, and Bica. All are operated by Carris, (including timetables and funicular’s history) the Lisbon city transport undertaking.

Maria Givencho likes her job. The funicular’s operating hours are 0700-0055 every day. One way ticket € 1.40.

The story of the Glória funicular can be traced back to 1875, when the Lisbon City Council gave the rights to two individuals to set up a form of transport on sloping terrain in the Calçada da Glória. The construction projects, however, were never approved and time slipped by. Finally the funicular opened to the public on 24 October 1885, with the pomp and circumstance typical of the time – a host of guests, fireworks, music and much cheering and hooraying. More…

When you go out of the funicular you will find on the right side the viewpoint Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara.

Viewpoint Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. This wonderful belvedere will give you a unique insight into the city. It is rather quiet during the day, but it completely changes at night when young people seek fun and action in the Bairro Alto.

The view from this small garden is (for me)the best in the city.

Just a stone’s throw away lies Instituto do Vinho do Porto, at Rua de Sao Pedro de Alcântara nos. 39-49, where a range of port wines may be tasted and purchased (open from 12:00 – 24:00). When I came in, the service was very slow, but after 10 minutes a waiter saw me…… You can order by the glass or bottle.

The cities biggest open food market is selling everything: from inky octopus and fresh seafood to fabulous fruit, from real Portugese products like ‘hot’ piri-piri to funeral flowers waiting for a dead body…..

This is Lisbon’s cheapest market. The seafood forms a large part of the Portugese diet with 1001 ways to cook it. Bacalhau is the Portugese name for cod, a very popular fish, so much that they have a different bacalhau recipe for each day of the year!

In 2007 the market celebrated a 125 year of existence: beautiful pictures are on the walls from fish sellers (varinas) of the Ribeira Market from a hundred years ago, when the fishermen moored their ship here to sell the fresh fish.

On Sunday mornings there is a Collectors fair from 09:00-14:00. The 2nd floor of the market has also been converted into a touristy ‘cultural’ centre. It sells locally produced items such as port and honey, and handicrafts. Website http://www.espacoribeira.pt/

Around 1974, after the revolution, the Napoleão family started selling wines and Port wines in Lisbon. A peculiar name for a Portugese family of course, but the explanation is a simple one. Portugal was once occupied by France for a short period of time and like in other European countries Napoleon obliged civilians to register a surname. 8 generations ago the ancestors of Christina Napoleão (below) chose the name of the French emperor.

The family now owns six shops in Lisbon, and specializes in the best Portugese wines and Port wines. The youngest store of the Napoleão family, located in a beautiful old renovated building on Rua dos Fanqueiros, only recently opened in 2008, also sells top quality olive oil, tasty jams, azulejos (traditional tiles) and many other typical Portugese goodies.
