Poster near Miradouro da Graca Lisbon

“” Passeio o seu cão de saquinho na mão!” ‘Take your dog for a walk with a poop bag in your  hand!”

I saw this funny poster near one of my favorite places in Lisbon,  Miradouro da Graça, a splendid viewpoint offering a panoramic view of the castle and central Lisbon. The open-air cafe and its relaxing atmosphere is a favorite with young locals, especially in late afternoon. During the summer it remains open well into the night.

This one has very sad eyes….near the church in Rosssio, close to Palácio da Independência (Palace of Independece) and the famous small  A Ginjinhacafe.

Rua da Costa do Castelo

Rua da Costa do Castelo, walking up to the old castelo São Jorge (Castle of Saint George), located on the highest of the seven hills of the historic center of the city.

doggy in the window Alfama

Alfama, at lunch time (almoço). The most famous historic and oldest neighborhood in Lisbon.   I manage to get lost every time I walk there…! It’s a labyrinth of lanes (becos) paved with pebbles, tiny alleys, steps, arches, courtyards and small squares. Houses, shouldering each other, with tiles (azulejos) and wrought iron balconies with lazy cats, birds in cages and sometimes a sleeping dog…. 🙂

Cafe Noo bai Santa Catarina Lisbon

One of my favourite places and of many Lisbon locals and visitors of the city. The entrance of Cafe Noobai is located on Miradoura de Santa Catarina, also known as Adamastor. This bar and restaurant is certainly worth a visit because of the wonderful view over the Tejo river side, the relaxed ambience and the nice people.

Lisbon beggars using dogs Baixa

Beggars & dogs

In Lisbon there are many beggars on the streets. Sadly enough some of them use animals, many tourists give money to this boy. The dog doesn’t look very happy on the street in the heat of the summer……you’ll find him ‘working’ in the city center Baixa.

Obama’s daughter Malia walks the First Family’s new puppy, Bo, on the grounds of the White House.

So far, I never saw a Portuguese ‘Water Dog’ in Lisbon…… But maybe Obama bought him because these very smart dogs were often taken with sailors during  the overseas Portuguese discoveries ?  😉

BIANCA’‘s mission is to save abandoned animals and animals in risk situations.

The shelter is located in Sesimbra – a coastal city 30 km south of Lisbon. ‘BIANCA’ save them, give them a temporary shelter, treat the sick ones, vaccinate them and finally find new, responsible owners.

Association ‘BIANCA’ is a private Portuguese association, a registered charity with a public utility status, whose objective is to rescue dogs and cats and to rehome them to good homes. ‘BIANCA’ runs a shelter for around 250 dogs and has 50 cats in “temporary families”.

Feta (reserved)

‘BIANCA’ was officially created on 17th July 2002. First, it had neither kennel nor any other physical structure. Its work was based on private houses and hotels for animals. In 2006 the kennel was opened – with a capacity for 50 animals. Today more than 250! BIANCA’ does not want to be a deposit place for animals. They deserve much more than that!

‘BIANCA’ receives around 30 new animals every month. It is always a struggle to keep a reasonable number of them in the shelter and to be able to rehome as many as possible every month. Many animals that  ‘BIANCA’ receive are in a very bad state: after an accident, with broken bones and wounds, puppies and kittens found dehydrated in garbage bins, animals physically abused.

Connie: “I brought this dog to ‘BIANCA‘. He wandered around near Cabo Espichel (15 km from Sesimbra), he was very skinny and scared. A friend of mine offered him a chicken leg…and now we are good friends!

Wolfie has lived here for one year now,  and I really hope to find a new owner for this very nice dog!” Youtube video (update: Wolfie has a new owner and he is happy ) 🙂

Veterinary bills

‘BIANCA’ has always many female and male dogs to sterilise. Females are always urgent.

The volunteers of ‘BIANCA’ count with the help of the vets who give them discounted prices but nevertheless the  monthly veterinary bills are significant. Every animal that is given for adoption from the kennel is vaccinated, dewormed and has a chip. All adult female dogs and cats are sterilised and many male dogs and cats castrated.

Adoption

Female puppies and kittens are given for adoption on the basis of an adoption contract in which the new owner obliges himself to have them sterilised when they reach the right age.
