Vintage port is made only in exceptional years, must be bottled within 2 years of the harvest date and be 100 % wine from that harvest. The magic of Vintage Port is different in every phase: as a young wine its captures the useful fruit characters, then after 20 years or more the effects of the slow bottle age integration are revealed and finally, after many decades the spirit dominates the wine. Vintage Port is amazing in all the three phases. A sua Saúde (to your health) !

Famous poster ‘the kiss’. As the couple leans together for a kiss, playful cupid offers them a glass of Ramos Pinto Port instead. ‘The kiss’ is one of the most recognized wine posters in the world. Founder of this Port House, Adriano Ramos Pinto, strongly believed in promotion both in Portugal and his primary market, Brazil. He backed his product with well-planned sales drive based on artistic advertisements.

The Napoleão wine shops, existing for more than 50 years in Lisbon, are specialised in the best Portuguese wines and Port wines. They can explain you all about the best Vintage years of the 20th Century.

Owner of restaurant ‘Merca Tudo’ Guiomar Noronha: “11 years ago I opened this restaurant and I still love this place. Before that I was working for a travel agency and traveled a lot”.

“My background is half Spanish: my grand-grand mother married a Spaniard, they lived in Santa María del Mar. Don Angel and Linda Castro immigrated from Spain to Cuba. The Castros owned and lived on a 32.000-acre sugar plantation in the Oriente Province in Cuba. They had 2 boys: Fidel and Raoul Castro”.

Ementa (menu card). Merca is the short word for Mercado (Market), Tudo means all or everything. Guiomar Noronha: “This picture is about 300 years old. I found it by coincidence in a very old newspaper in a bookshop”.

”The beautiful creamy fridge is from 1932 (!) and still working fine! It used to work on gas and the inside consists of marblestone. Sometimes it costs me a lot of trouble finding a part for the fridge, but I would never want to get rid of it”.

You can win a taste of Ginja if you manage to throw a coin in a small glas inside a big bottle filled with water. My friend Erika just throwed her coin into the bottle and… yes!

We enjoyed: two steaks au poivre € 30 ; two Greek salads (salada Grega) € 3 ; one bottle of great Portugese wine (Monte Velho) € 10, two coffees € 2:50. Sobremesa (desert): one delicious Bolo Árabe (with almonds & pumpkin ) € 4.

Excellent venue for a relaxed informal dinner, max. capacity of 50 people. Our experience was absolutely lovely!

This is a tiny bar where a maximum of three people can go in at a time and order a Ginja.

Ginja or Ginjinha as most people call it, is a liqueur made of a cherry-like berry called (not surprisingly) Ginja. The berries are fermented into a brandy that’s slightly bitter, slightly sweet and very sticky.

Lisbon students in September, a brand new school year…

You can order a Ginja for little money and with or without a cherry in it. The Ginja’s are on the bottom of the bottle and it requires a fair bit of skill to get just one berry into a glass. Most Portugese people like to have their Ginjinha ‘com Ginja’, with a cherry in the glass. If you don’t want it, ask for one ‘sem Ginja’ (without a Ginja).

The older Portuguese men drink their Ginja in one time. After this, they suck on the berry for a while and spit the pit onto the streets.

There’s no specific time for drinking a Ginja, the Portuguese tend to drink all day and ‘A Ginjinha’ is open from early morning.
