Authentic apartment in Mouraria , old town Lisbon, on the second floor, 3 bedrooms , free use of wireless internet connection and satellite TV. Outside sunny patio in summertime from March till October. Minimum stay 4 nights up to 4 persons or 3 nights with 5-6 persons. Price depends on season. Direct from Dutch owner. The apartment is 120 years old and nicely renovated.  Near São Jorge‘ castle with its beautiful viewpoints. 3 minutes walk from starting point 28 antique tourist tram, metro and buses, square Martim Moniz. The supermarket is 5 minutes away. From the airport (8 km), a taxi will take you (about € 10-12 ) in 15 minutes to our apartment. Nearby Sintra, Estoril, Cascais and beaches of Costa da Caparica.

It is less than a 15 minutes walk from Bairro Alto, Lisbons heart of funky bars and restaurants.

Mouraria is a ancient area in the heart of Lisbon where fado was born.

Though it’s very far south, Lisbon’s Atlantic breezes keep it generally a little cooler than other cities on the same latitude. June is probably the best summer month to visit, especially since the Saints’ festivals fall then. Spring and fall are very pleasant, warm, and sunny. Winter tends to stay warm too, but the rain can be relentless.

Free use of wireless internet (no laptop available). Extra cleaning cost € 50/60. Arrival time: from 15:00. Departure: 11:00. Reservation with contract and cancellation conditions. Inclusive: gas and electricity.

Payment procedure: 20 % by reservation to guarantee your booking and to block the dates off for you in the calendar. You are required to do the second payment (80%) at least 2 weeks before your arrival.

Ideaal uitgangspunt om al wandelend de vele bezienswaardigheden van Lissabon te bezichtigen, geen metro nodig naar het centrum. Geen nachtelijk café-lawaai, wel komt er verkeer door het straatje en in Lissabon rijden de vuilniswagens ‘s nachts.  Afstand vliegveld ca. 8 km. (per taxi € 10-12 incl. bagage). Startpunt trammetje 28, metro, taxistandplaats en bussen bij plein Martim Moniz is 3 min. lopen.  Castelo de São Jorge ligt op loop afstand. Sintra, Estoril, Cascais en de stranden van Costa da Caparica zijn makkelijk bereikbaar. De legendarische 16e-eeuwse uitgaanswijk Bairro Alto is ca. 15 min. lopen.

Historische wijken worden langzamerhand gerestaureerd, ook Mouraria, dat haar naam dankt aan vroegere bezetters, de Moren (Os Mouros). Het straatje ligt dichtbij twee centrale- en monumentale pleinen Praca Dom Pedro IV (Rossio in de volksmond) en Praca da Figueira. This small but very charming 300 years old house is situated in a quiet area of  Alfama, one of the most popular neighbourhoods of Lisbon. Nicely renovated (3 floors, a maximum of 5 persons can share it).

Owner Pedro Silva will welcome you with a fine bottle of Portuguese wine. The house is located 8 km from Lisbon’s airport, near a narrowed maze of streets full of fado houses and restaurants, passing up the hill at São Jorge castle with its viewpoints over Lisbon downtown. Nearby Sintra, Estoril, Cascais and beaches of Costa da Caparica.

Located near the Sta. Apolónia train and metro station and one of the hippest nightclubs in town: Lux. Nearby you will find the National Pantheon and the legendary flea market “Feira da Ladra”. Pedro Silva, the Portuguese owner (see picture) owns one of the most popular bars in Bairro Alto, Capela, Lisbons heart of funky bars and restaurants.

If you are bringing your own car, this is one of the few areas of Lisbon with an easy parking space (€ 5- 7 a day). From the airport, a taxi will take you (about € 10) in ca. 15 minutes to this house.

Rua Ilha Terceira is a quiet street situated in the heart of Estefania, near Saldanha square and the famous Avenida Republica. A must-do on Avenida Republica is to have breakfast in the wonderful old tea and lunchroom Versailles which has it’s own bakery. Pastelaria Versailles was first opened in 1922. On Saldanha Square there’s the highly frequented cinema Monumental where many young Portugese meet in the bar of the cinema, ‘Movies’. A supermaket is located at only 5 minutes walking distance.

Public transport

From Saldanha metro station you can easily travel to all parts of town. The airport is just ten minutes away by taxi. Parking is free in this area.

The apartment

The 80 m2 apartment has 2 floors and consists of a living toom, two master bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a garden (80m2 as well). The garden is unique and you will find among others a rubber tree, bird of paradise, bougainvillea and a palm and banana tree.

Close to the apartment: the legendary flea market “Feira da Ladra” where you find for sale antiques, books, music etc. (twice a week, Tuesday and Saturday).

BBQ with some good friends: Maurits (from Holland, living in Lisbon), Aurelio (from Brazil, living in Lisbon), Sheila (Canadian, living in Lisbon), Rob (living in Lisbon) and his mother (from England), Jur and Hans (from Holland) and I (Julie, living in Amsterdam, sometimes in Lisbon). I’m the one who writes the articles on this blog.

Apartment Mouraria June 2009, beautiful new umbrellas

The 30 square meter patio is what makes this apartment really nice. In summertime you can catch some sun (from March – October) and walk the to kitchen fridge to get yourself a cold beer or a freezin’ bottle of Vinho Verde. At night you can sit outside, cool of after a hot summers day and have barbeque. There’s a large wooden table with 6 chairs, 1 relax chair and 2 beautiful new umbrellas

Facilities

The apartment, with a total surface of 100 square meters offers a lot of comfort.

The sunny livingroom has antique wooden doors that open to a small french balcony overlooking ‘Rua do Terreirinho’, a narrow street with many old houses and typical bars, and small restaurants. There’s a couch (twoseater) and a large eating and computer table with four chairs. A free and fast ADSL connection is available, bring your own laptop and you’ll have unlimited acces to the internet. There is a LCD satelite TV system in place with hundreds of international channels as well as a CD-player with Fado and traditional Portugese CD’s that you can use.

The master bedroom (with a double bed) that lies next to the living room has it’s own balcony facing the street as well. Clean sheets (and a full cleaning of the house) are taken care of before you arrive. If you plan to stay for a langer period we can arrange for the house and the beds to be cleaned during your visit as well. 2 big antique wooden closet provides more then sufficient closet space for your luggage.

The house has two extra bedrooms (one with boxspring beds) and five/six people can sleep in all comfort. New duvets and luxury duvet-covers (Essenza). A Chicco babybed plus matrass ( 0-4 years) is available for free.

There’s a large bathroom, bathtub and shower, a washing machine and a dryer (you can use it for free). Plenty of towels are provided.

The kitchen has been renovated, there’s a small table for your breakfast, a fridge, microwave, 4-burner-electric-cooker, pans, coffee-maker (and a Nespresso), fruit juicer, (wine) glasses, plates, cutlery, kitchen-linen etc. Good heating system for th e colder evenings in wintertime via eco-heating.

Mouraria, home of fado Music

No neighborhood in Lisbon is praised more in Fado music then Mouraria. This ‘Bairro’ (neighborhood in Portuguese) is a maze of little, narrow streets, situated between Graça (beautiful city viewpoint), Alfama and Costa de Castelo  (Castle of Saint George) is nowadays a ‘multiculti’ area.

Mouraria was given it’s name by the first Portugese king, Dom Afonso Henriques after the ‘siege of Lisbon’, in which Lisbon was taken over again by the (Christian) Portugese army from the Moorish overlords. This siege put an end to the Islamic control in the Iberian peninsula. The Moors however kept on living in the city after the conquist and gathered in the Mouraria.

It is said that the melancholic sounds of the music and singing of the Moorish people was at the base of Fado music. Amália Rodrigues, Lady of Lisbon, the ‘queen of Fado’ was born near Mouraria on Rua Martim Faz. More

The little streets of Mouraria are full of typical grocery stores, old bars (taverna’s) and cheap traditional restaurants. (No modern nightlife, if your looking for bars and disco’s, go to the nearby Bairro Alto neighborhood). At the corner of the street is a smoking allowed bar/ restaurant, Anos 60, open till 04:00 or later….excellent live music Fado/Brasilian a.o.) !

Just to introduce you to some of our favourite neighbours in the street, meet Jose Marie and his wife on the picture on the left and Rui on the picture on the right.

Rui has a small cafe on Largo do Terreirinho 23, where most of the locals gather during the day for a quick beer (imperial). Try a pasteis de bacalhao (a small pastry with cod fish).
The restaurant of Jose Marie is a perfect place for a real portugese lunch. Don’t expect international food in this tiny restaurant. Their specialities are dishes like Cozido a Portuguesa (different kinds of meats, sausages and vegetables cooked in the same water), Coelho a caçador (Rabbitstew, in red wine) and Favas com entrecosto (Beans with porc meat and sausages).

If you don’t feel like experimenting, try a ‘bitoque’. It’s steak and fries, with a fried egg, garlic and rice. Prices are very fair ca. 6 euro for a meal. In the late hours when the shops are closed and you are on your way home, you can always stop at Jose’s and take some beers, wine, water, sigarettes and even food home.
